The story behind the Christmas Stocking

It’s that time of the year again to begin decorating Christmas trees and hanging Christmas Stockings.

There are many tales, but the most consistent is the story of a nobleman named Nicholas who heard of a widowed father with three beautiful daughters. The father was worried about his daughters being unable to marry due to poverty and was too proud to ask for help. Nicholas heard the man’s plight and knew he would refuse help, so he dropped gold coins down the chimney. The coins went into a pair of shoes left on the hearth, while others went into socks hanging by the fire to dry.

Because of that legend, the Christmas stocking was born.

There was a time when people would fill the stocking with fruit, candy toys or small clothing items.

Fast forward to today, and people worldwide have created their Christmas Stocking traditions. Something that was once just for children now includes many adults continuing to hang their stockings by the Christmas tree each year, alongside their children’s and even grandchildren’s stockings.
