Living life to avoid inaction regret

The biggest regrets in life are not about the failures we experience, but about the paths that are not taken. For seniors, age and poor health may seemingly prevent taking action that you have always wanted to do. But that is not true as so many who decide they want the most out of life have discovered.

By not experiencing life to the fullest, the vitality that we posses may seem to be wasted and leads to goals not being fulfilled. When Pope John Paul II was on his deathbed, his biggest regret was not doing things that he should have accomplished. The good news is that it is never too late if you start today. Here are a few tips that will help you realize your goals in life.

Set Goals for Yourself Using the “SMART” Principle

SMART stands for the following;

–        Specific

–        Measurable

–        Achievable

–        Relevant

–        Time-Based Goal

This means that when you are planning for the future and the things you want to achieve, be sure that they are specific in nature, measurable in results, achievably by your efforts, relevant to your growth as a person, and time-based, so you can set a deadline and get it done.

Going to Mars may not be achievable, at least for the foreseeable future and not without a great deal of help. But writing a novel, building an important project, or taking that trip you always wanted to go on does fit within the SMART principle.

Start with something that you have always wanted to do. It could be a short trip to a location that you have never been. You may write a short story. Or, you may start working out to achieve a better physical condition. Start with something that is small and achievable, then work your way towards longer-range goals.

You are Never Too Old to Smash New Goals

You may think that you are too old to achieve the goals that you want out of life. Seniors often look back and ask themselves if only they could have started sooner. However, many seniors do achieve goals that you may not think are possible or at least practical.

Willie Nelson is best known for being a country singer. But did you also know that he is a fifth-degree black belt in the martial art known as GongKwon Yusel? Most are unaware of this side of Willie’s life. But what is more amazing is that he achieved his fifth-degree status at the age of 81. Wille started practicing GongKwon Yusel at the age of 61 and persisted for two decades until finally achieving fifth-degree status.

Perhaps Willie will go for a sixth-degree black belt? After all, if the age of 81 didn’t hold him back, then why should being a few years older be any different?

Setting goals at any age, even for seniors, is a solid, proven idea for a healthier life. When you take action on those ideas, you can ensure that your vitality will be renewed, your focus becomes sharper, and you feel more fulfilled in life.
