Amputation – what to expect

Usually, as a complication of diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking or kidney failure, amputations in Australia are done because the arteries have become blocked, and there is not enough blood getting to the limb. A limb may also need amputation due to a severe infection, affected by gangrene or cancer, has been seriously injured or is deformed and doesn’t move or function properly.

Your doctor or specialist will assess your healthy limb since it will have to carry extra strain or duties after the operation and advise you on any adaptations you may need to make at home or work. In addition, physiotherapy will help with your rehabilitation after the procedure.

You will have either a general anaesthetic or an epidural with the wound closed with stitches or staples. A drain may be inserted under your skin to drain away excess fluid, and the surgical area will be covered with a bandage for a few days to prevent infection.

The hospital will fit a compression garment around the stump to help with swelling. You will need to wear this daily and take it off at bedtime. Ensure you wash your compression garments regularly and follow your medical team’s instructions to look after the stump.

Your physiotherapist and occupational therapist will work out a rehabilitation program to help you return to work and other activities. The program will start a few days after surgery and help you manage independently, for example, by teaching you how to get in and out of a wheelchair. You may then progress to an exercise program and learn how to use your prosthetic limb if you have one.

Amputation can affect every area of your life, including home and work. It is a lot to adapt to, and you will need support. You may need modifications to your home or equipment such as a stair-ramp, handrails, or a wheelchair lift. You will likely have to change your routines and find new ways to do what you are used to; however, with the right help, training and equipment, you can enjoy a good quality of life.
