Seniors Month

For more than a year, many people have been affected one way or another by COVID-19. Whether being hit financially, by the change of travel routines, or by the missing of social interaction, there can be no denying that the senior community has been challenged more than most.

Seniors Month has grown out of what has been previously known as seniors week, with the first Seniors Week being held back in 1960. This year, Seniors Month celebrates the theme of social connections.

Connecting has never been more critical. So, especially this month more than any other, reach out to your grandparents or an older person in your neighbourhood. Sit down with them and ask them about their childhood, what games they played, or discuss their favourite music. Why not ask them about their grandparents and what they remember about them. Gathering this information and then documenting it in writing would make an excellent gift for them and perhaps something they could share with their loved ones, celebrating their life and telling their story. Maybe you could plan a cooking day with them, learn an old family recipe, or teach them one of your favourites.

The benefits of social connection for seniors are many, including an essential role in their mental, emotional and physical health. In addition, seniors with a solid social network have a better quality of life.

In fact, something as simple as a brief conversation at the shops can be beneficial, so try and connect with someone today while shopping.

Queensland Seniors Month provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation, and enhance community connections.
