Looking after your ankle, foot or lower leg after an injury

A person who has suffered an ankle, foot or lower leg injury will benefit from a walking boot. Also known as a moon boot, the walking boot is strapped to the affected leg and will assist in immobilising it to ensure proper healing.

The boot is considered a type of medical shoe used to protect the foot and ankle after an injury or surgery. Can be used for broken bones, tendon injuries, severe sprains, or shin splints.

These boots provide more mobility than a traditional cast.

Your doctor may have you use a boot for one to six weeks, depending on how severe your injury is.

The function of the boot is to offload the injured area; however, it is advised to continue walking while wearing the boot. Using your leg maintains good blood flow to the feet and legs to support optimum recovery.

Often it will be advised to sleep with your boot on but with the straps loosened. If you are to sleep with the boot on it is suggested to surround your leg with pillows to give extra support.

WOW Mobility supply moon boots for all shapes and sizes. With various features such as shock absorbing soles that reduce the impact from the heel strike, and a rocker bottom engineered to promote a natural gait and increase stability.

Always ensure if there is a liner in your boot to fit it without wrinkles. Ensure your heel is a the very back of the boot and that the boot is the correct size. Toes should not hang over the edge of the boot, with the height of the boot finishing below the top of your femur bone. Secure the straps on the boot starting with the strap over the ankle, then at the bottom of the foot and working your way up the leg.
