Hip Replacement

So you are going in for a hip replacement? This operation can relieve hip pain and improve your movement immensely.

Medical professionals suggest that hip replacement recovery can take around two to four weeks on average, but everyone is different. It depends on a few factors, including how active you were before your surgery, age, diet, pre-existing ailments, and other health and lifestyle factors contributing to your recovery.

Having your home prepared before your operation will make things easier when you return home after your procedure. To help you with this, you can engage an occupational therapist to review your home setup. For example, occupational therapists will generally check your bed height, chair height, walkways, shower, bath and toilet safety and kitchen layouts.

Preparing meals in advance and freezing them or buying frozen dinners will help make meal preparation more manageable when you return home. In addition, you will need to organise family, friends, or neighbours to help with the housework, shopping, driving or providing light assistance with showering, dressing, putting on, and taking off the stockings required for six weeks after your operation.

WOW! Mobility & Rehab supply over the toilet aids, shower stools, and walkers to assist your recovery. These are available to purchase or to hire.

After three months, you should be back to most of your usual activities. You may find that you can return to things you haven’t been able to do for some time because of your hip pain. Make the most of these improvements by returning to the activities you once enjoyed. Always check with your doctor before resuming driving.

Having prepared yourself well and engaged actively in your treatment, you will be able to return quickly to a more active independent lifestyle.
