Disable Stereotypes

December every year we recognise International Day of People with Disability. This year we saw 2020’s theme around Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.

2020 has been an isolating year for most of us. Those with a disability and the older generation were considered vulnerable to COVID and in many ways, suffered more than most of us can imagine. Heightening the fear for their well-being and restricting their movement more than usual.

Disability can result from genetic disorders, illness or an accident and can be visible or hidden. Disability affects people in various ways; a disability can be permanent or temporary with minimal or substantial impacts and can include the ability to learn things, mobility, or communication.

Throughout Australia, around 4.4 million people live with disability. There are 2.65 million carers which is about 11% of our population. Anyone can be a carer, but many don’t recognise themselves as carers, stating they are just children, partners, parents, friends or relatives who care for someone close to them.

Typically, International Day of People with Disability would see disability provider organisations, people with disability, businesses, governments and communities in a range of activities. There has been a different approach this year as many celebrations emerged through the digital world.

There is so much to celebrate when it comes to the achievements of people with disability. Not just on the day but throughout the year.
