5 Small Home Improvements for Home Independence

Making your home more accessible and independent doesn’t have to be an enormous task – in fact, it’s usually the little improvements that can make the biggest difference in life quality! We have compiled our list of the ultimate home improvements you can make easily to ensure your home is as accessible as it can be. Let’s get into it!

  1. Plate Guard – This may come as no surprise, but it’s hard to have an independent house without a plate guard. A curved piece of plastic, it helps the eater pick up their food from the plate, particularly if eating with one hand. This is an excellent addition to any kitchen for a small cost to truly level up the quality of life!
  2. The Right Cutlery – We’re still in the kitchen for number two, and for good reason. Eating can be a challenge, so why not invest in some cutlery that works for you? These pieces feature a shaft that can bend to any angle to accommodate reduced range of motion and to provide great comfort. The rocker knife cuts with minimum motion and best of all – they’re all machine washable!
  3. Grip Reacher – A reaching aid is essential in any home! Having one that is lightweight with a trigger handle is a game changer, making it a lot easier to grab a hold of hard-to-reach items and for tasks such as dressing. Our favourite one has a magnetic head for picking up small metal items (such as pins), a hook on the end for dressing, a palm lever to assist with poor hand strength, a clip to attach to a rollator or wheelchair AND a rotating head. Genius!
  4. The Perfect Kettle“Have you ever been told you cannot do something? Something you have done before with no hassle.” ~ Andy De Petra, Inventor of Uccello Kettle. This is a kettle that eases the struggle of pouring a morning coffee, enabling people to maintain their independence. It has a beautiful, fluid motion when pouring and is an absolute essential for home independence!
  5. Drink Cover – We’re at the end of our list, and this one technically can be used outside of the home as well as inside it – but it remains a huge improvement for independence! This is a reusable, silicone cover that fits over most glasses, mugs, cups or cans and stays on to eliminate spills and encourage hydration. You slip a straw through and there you go – a fantastic option for people with limited coordination or mobility, and great for use when lying down! Better yet, our personal favourite is made from 100% BPA-free food grade durable platinum silicone and is safe for the dishwasher, microwave and freezer.
